At 50 tögrög, the 1955 design opens into a broad green field where Sükhbaatar and the socialist coat of arms share the front without competing for attention.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
The front pairs Damdinii Sükhbaatar with the socialist coat of arms beneath Cyrillic Mongolian inscriptions. The larger format allows the portrait, emblem and engraved framing to read with greater visual breadth. Typography and value numerals occupy the remaining field in a supporting role, preserving the portrait as the dominant element.
Reverse
Mongolian text and intricate guilloche work occupy the back rather than a landscape or architectural vignette. The dense ornament provides a measured counterweight to the state imagery on the front. Official inscriptions and denomination figures are distributed around the main imagery, creating a clear hierarchy across the printed field.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, the 50-tögrög note shows the 1955 redesign at a larger scale: the same Sükhbaatar-and-emblem formula is retained, while Cyrillic inscriptions clearly separate the series from its predecessors.
