Eduardo Mondlane and the Machava flag-raising still dominate the 1989 front, with soldiers, crowds and Praça dos Heróis continuing the story on the reverse.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
Eduardo Mondlane appears beside the revised coat of arms while five FRELIMO soldiers raise the flag at Machava stadium in Lourenço Marques (now Maputo) on 25 June 1975. The front preserves the historical scene introduced on the 1980 note. The pictorial element is anchored by Portuguese inscriptions and repeated denomination markings.
Reverse
Flag-bearing soldiers march before civilian crowds, accompanied by the star-shaped monument in Praça dos Heróis and a civil-war mural in Maputo. The bank logo remains embedded within the dense public-history scene. A green, yellow, and orange scheme keeps the separate pictorial and monetary elements within a single visual field.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, the 1989 printing closes the dated sequence of this hundred-meticais design after the 1983 and 1986 issues. Because the artwork remains stable, the date and issue details become the main chronological distinctions.
