Design & Symbolism
Obverse
At right, Samora Moisés Machel stands with four young boys beside the FRELIMO monument in Maputo and the national coat of arms. The boys and monument place the portrait in a public setting rather than an isolated frame. The red, orange, and brown palette provides continuity between the illustration, typography and value numerals.
Reverse
A mine engine hauls coal cars as miners work with drills, while farmers and a combine occupy the agricultural section of the scene. The bank logo with hoe and pickaxe also appears on the reverse. Its red, orange, and brown tonality carries evenly through the subject, inscriptions and denomination markings.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, the 1983 issue shifts its reverse to production themes: coal mining and mechanised agriculture share the field, while Samora Machel and the FRELIMO monument remain on the front.
