Design & Symbolism
Obverse
Seven soldiers march with bayonets while mobile missile systems and artillery vehicles occupy the background. At right, Samora Moisés Machel presents the Mozambican flag to a guerrilla detachment beside the national coat of arms. Portuguese inscriptions share the composition with the denomination, forming a compact frame for the imagery.
Reverse
A soldier inspects his rifle while other armed soldiers hike through a wooded setting with rifles and knapsacks. The Banco de Moçambique logo with hoe and pickaxe sits beside the military scene. The image is set among Portuguese inscriptions and repeated value markings that identify the note’s monetary function.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, this belongs to the first metical issue of 16 June 1980, when the new currency replaced the escudo at par. Unlike the provisional overprinted escudos, it was part of a fully new national banknote series.
