Marching troops and artillery return almost unchanged in 1986, but the revised coat of arms at centre separates this issue from the original 1980 type.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
Seven soldiers march with bayonets beside mobile missile systems and artillery vehicles, while Samora Machel presents the national flag to a guerrilla detachment. The revised coat of arms identifies the later issue at the centre of the front. The remaining space combines Portuguese lettering with clearly repeated indicators of value.
Reverse
A soldier inspects a rifle as other troops move through trees with rifles and knapsacks. The hoe-and-pickaxe bank logo remains in place, preserving the reverse scene of the earlier fifty-meticais type. Denomination figures are integrated with Portuguese text, giving the scene a precise monetary framework.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, the 1986 note is a later-date variety of a familiar design rather than a new type. The revised coat of arms, changed serial-number font and De La Rue printing distinguish it from the original 1980 issue.
