Blue and brown place Alberto Chissano’s wood carving and Malangatana Ngwenya’s painting on the front, with three spear-and-shield warriors occupying the reverse.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
A wood carving by Alberto Mabungulane Chissano and a painting by Malangatana Ngwenya share the front with the national coat of arms. A reed inside a cog serves as the registration device. Colour is led by blue and brown, extending from the main motif through the surrounding printed detail.
Reverse
Three warriors carrying spears and shields occupy the reverse beside the Banco de Moçambique logo and the reed-and-cog registration device. The surrounding typography supports the motif without crowding its outline or ornamental detail. A predominantly blue and brown treatment gives the imagery and official lettering a consistent visual register.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, the 1991 series introduces a new bank logo and Joaquim Chissano watermark, while this denomination is especially identifiable by the Alberto Chissano wood carving and Malangatana painting on its front.
