ThemePortraits & People

General Aung San's uniformed portrait meets warm orange ornament, giving this first Myanmar kyat issue a compact blend of memory and renewal.

Design & Symbolism

Obverse

General Aung San appears in Burma Defence Army uniform and cap, his portrait set against pale brown and orange linework. Burmese inscriptions and a large written denomination occupy the right half, where a circular floral device softens the military formality of the portrait. The serial number and value devices are held close to the borders, leaving Aung San as the clear centre of attention.

Reverse

A carved dragon rises along the left edge, while a lotus-based ornamental panel fills the centre in orange, pink and green. English bank text and the ONE KYAT denomination give the reverse a more open, decorative character than the portrait side. The dragon and lotus carry the imagery away from military biography and into Myanmar's traditional visual language.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, P-67 opened the Central Bank of Myanmar's new issue sequence on 1 March 1990. It retained General Aung San as both portrait and watermark subject, but placed him in a compact 131 mm format that differs from the smaller denominations introduced later in the decade. It links established national portraiture with the first currency carrying the country's Myanmar title.
