Deep violet engraving moves from a watchful chinthe to a ceremonial state barge, joining protection with royal pageantry.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
Deep purple and violet ornament frames a seated chinthe facing left, its upright posture reinforced by the horizontal bank title above. Burmese inscriptions and large value devices fill the centre without competing with the guardian. The watermark field at left and the serial line across the lower area keep the face visually balanced despite its dense engraving.
Reverse
A royal state barge stretches across the reverse, its long profile and tiered superstructure rendered in dark violet against pale geometric fields. The vessel brings horizontal movement to a note dominated elsewhere by the compact mass of the chinthe. English text and the ten-kyat denomination sit low in the frame, leaving the ceremonial craft to define the scene.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, P-71b occupies the middle position in Myanmar's 5, 10 and 20 kyat chinthe sequence introduced in the mid-1990s. Its left-facing guardian reverses the orientation used on the neighbouring five- and twenty-kyat values, while the royal barge gives the denomination a ceremonial subject absent from the companion notes. Together, these differences identify the three denominations as a deliberate design set.
