From a dark green chinthe to Yangon's elephant fountain, the design links an architectural guardian with a familiar public landmark.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
A right-facing chinthe is engraved in deep olive-green and brown against blue-green ornament and Burmese lettering. Its raised head and compact body establish a strong vertical accent, while the denomination spreads across the central field. A security thread carrying Burmese text and a chinthe-and-20 watermark extend the guardian motif into the note's security structure.
Reverse
The elephant fountain in People's Park, Yangon, occupies the centre of the reverse, with sculpted elephants supporting the basin beneath a domed canopy. A smaller view of the park appears beside it, widening the setting beyond the monument itself. English bank text and repeated value figures frame the landmark in green, brown and blue ornament.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, P-72 brings the largest format and highest denomination to the early 5, 10 and 20 kyat chinthe group. Pick records the design under one number, while specialist cataloguing separates thin- and thick-paper production; this example belongs to the thick-paper form. Introduced on 27 March 1994, it came before the five- and ten-kyat companions issued in 1995.
