ThemeSport & Traditional Games

Movement belongs to the chinlone players, while the chinthe on the face gives this five-kyat replacement note its formal anchor.

Design & Symbolism

Obverse

Burmese lettering and repeated value devices surround a right-facing chinthe on the brown and blue-green face. The guardian's dense modelling contrasts with the open watermark field at the right. Nothing in the principal artwork announces the note's replacement status; that distinction lies in the serial-prefix system.

Reverse

Chinlone players form a loose circle around the cane ball, turning the reverse into a study of coordination rather than competition. Their bodies create a lighter rhythm than the rigid chinthe on the face, while the English denomination and bank name hold the scene within a formal frame. The design gives a traditional game the visual weight normally reserved for monuments or portraits.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, P-70br preserves a production distinction that can easily disappear when the five-kyat notes are grouped only by design. It is the replacement form of P-70b, identified by a replacement prefix rather than a changed vignette. Pairing the two varieties shows how Myanmar marked substituted sheets while leaving the public face of the denomination untouched.
