Red and purple linework brings General Aung San back to the five-hundred-kyat denomination, paired with the central bank's Naypyidaw headquarters.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
General Aung San appears in national dress and a gaungbaung, his portrait placed against red, purple and pale orange security patterns. Burmese bank text and the denomination occupy the left side, while the serial prefix and suffix run vertically at the right. Windowed thread segments and a field of fine geometric marks introduce a markedly modern face.
Reverse
The Central Bank of Myanmar headquarters in Naypyidaw stretches across the reverse in low horizontal perspective. Its landscaped setting extends the scene beyond the building, while English bank text and the written denomination are integrated into the upper and lower borders. The restrained architecture offsets the portrait-led face without competing with it.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, P-85 followed the new Aung San 1,000-kyat note by just over six months and extended the portrait-led redesign to a second denomination. The issue was timed for 19 July 2020, Martyrs’ Day, directly linking its release date with the historical figure portrayed. It also replaced the long-running chinthe face of earlier 500-kyat issues with General Aung San’s portrait.
