ThemeReligious Heritage

Gandzasar's stone cathedral and two biblical scenes carry a continuous religious subject across the reddish-brown two-dram note.

Design & Symbolism

Obverse

The Cathedral of St John the Baptist at Gandzasar occupies the centre, with Saint Gregory the Illuminator standing to its right. The building is shown as a whole, its clustered roofs contrasting with the upright figure and patterned background. Armenian inscriptions identify the subjects, while the arms at the left accompany a composition dominated by ecclesiastical architecture.

Reverse

A sculpted Crucifixion from the cathedral's western wall appears beside John baptising Jesus. Architecture has given way to images associated with it: the carved cross on the left, the two standing figures on the right. The repetition of John the Baptist across the building's dedication and the baptism scene gives the two faces a particularly close connection.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, this issue began as a commission from an American numismatic wholesaler working with the Nagorno-Karabakh authorities. Österreichische Staatsdruckerei produced the notes in Austria, chiefly for the collector market, and they saw little everyday use. Regular numbered notes and separate specimen forms exist; neither should be confused with an ordinary Armenian dram issue.
