ThemeCultural Heritage

A crowned portrait, temple courtyard and Himalayan wildlife share the same modest sheet, giving Nepal's one-rupee value an unusually broad narrative.

Design & Symbolism

Obverse

Rather than isolating the royal portrait, the front sets King Birendra beside the Basaha bull and Pashupatinath Temple. Blue-violet guilloche, an obverse coin, wood-carving motifs and bands of cloud knit the subjects together, while the open watermark field at right acts as a deliberate pause.

Reverse

Two musk deer clear a narrow creek below Mount Ama Dablam, opening the reverse into a high Himalayan landscape. A pillar and the Nepal Rastra Bank emblem hold the left side, the coat of arms closes the right, and the bilingual inscriptions follow the lower border without competing with the central scene.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, P-37(2) is the 1995 continuation signed by Satyendra Pyara Shrestha and printed by Oberthur Fiduciaire. Its interest lies less in a redesigned image than in the handover between printer and governor: beside P-37(1), it forms a compact two-note study of how an unchanged type can acquire a distinct production history.
