A dark royal portrait and the tiered roof of Taleju Temple give way to grazing yaks and the white ridges of Mount Everest.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
King Gyanendra occupies the left side in royal dress and a plumed crown, his portrait engraved in black against pink, brown and green ornament. Taleju Temple in Kathmandu rises through the centre, with Nepali bank text above, a coin obverse near the upper right and the pale watermark field held apart by a scalloped frame.
Reverse
Two yaks graze across an open Himalayan foreground as Mount Everest and neighbouring ridges stretch behind them. The Nepal Rastra Bank emblem, bilingual value inscriptions and the national coat of arms stay near the margins, allowing the animals and mountain chain to carry the broadest part of the scene.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, P-46 is the first circulating five-rupee type of King Gyanendra's reign, introduced in August 2002 with his portrait engraved in black. That dark portrait is the quickest distinction from the red-portrait form introduced in 2004, while the De La Rue printing fixes this note at the opening of the design's short royal sequence.
