Design & Symbolism
Obverse
The Dutch words DE JAPANSCHE REGEERING name the Japanese government above TIEN CENT. Purple printing over a pale yellow ground relies on lettering and ornament, with no portrait or landscape to interrupt the message. The language and cent denomination preserve a familiar monetary vocabulary even though the authority named on the paper has changed.
Reverse
An enlarged 10 fills the central rosette, with four smaller values angled into the corners. Purple leaflike curls link the denomination panels across a finely patterned frame. The reverse carries no written currency name: repetition and scale identify the value, while pale spaces inside the border separate the numerals from the dense ornament.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, P-121a is identified by a block consisting of S followed by one or two digits. It belongs beside the two-letter and fractional-block versions of the ten-cent design, where a very small change in notation determines the catalogue variety. The note is undated: 1942 is the conventional issue attribution, not a year printed in the design.
