Ikoku’s portrait is held in warm red linework, while two Fulani milkmaids give the reverse its quiet sense of balance and passage.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
Dr. Alvan Ikoku fills the left panel, with glasses, suit and measured expression rendered in dense red-brown engraving. His name and dates sit within the portrait field, while the bank title, value and 2019 date extend toward the transparent right side. The Central Bank emblem and CBN watermark are built into that open polymer area, allowing the security structure to remain visible without a printed thread.
Reverse
Two Fulani milkmaids cross the reverse with bowls balanced above them, creating a paired vertical motif against the long horizontal note. A green map of Nigeria and the bank emblem occupy the left side; multilingual denomination text and the national coat of arms close the remaining space. The women’s movement softens the official framework and links the portrait of an educationist to a scene grounded in daily cultural practice.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, the 2019 P-39 carries the single-year Emefiele–Eleje signature combination within the polymer ten-naira sequence. Olufemi Fabamwo appears on the preceding dated issues, while Ahmed Bello Umar joins Emefiele in 2020, leaving this note between two longer administrative phases. That narrow placement gives the issue its collecting purpose: it is the necessary transition in a signature set even though the Ikoku portrait and Fulani reverse remain constant.
