Alvan Ikoku’s red portrait opens into a reverse of Fulani milkmaids, where education and daily labour share the same national frame.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
Dr. Alvan Ikoku looks outward from the left in a closely engraved portrait, his name and life dates integrated into the red polymer design. Central Bank lettering and the ten-naira denomination fill the central panel, while the 2022 date and serial fields define the issue. The bank emblem and CBN watermark occupy the clearer right side, using transparency and open space in place of a conventional security thread.
Reverse
Two Fulani milkmaids carry bowls on their heads across the reverse, their upright forms placed against a light field of red and gold linework. A green map of Nigeria and the bank emblem anchor the left, while multilingual value inscriptions and the national coat of arms complete the frame. The scene shifts the note from Ikoku’s formal portrait to the physical balance of everyday work, without turning that labour into spectacle.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, the 2022 P-39 is the final ten-naira date carrying the Emefiele–Umar signature pair. It closes the sequence begun in 2020 and precedes the Cardoso–Solaja issue of 2024, giving the note a clear endpoint within the modern polymer run. Because the design remains unchanged, the collecting interest lies in chronology and institutional handover: the same Ikoku and Fulani imagery passes from one leadership period to the next.
