Design & Symbolism
Obverse
Tafawa Balewa’s portrait occupies the broad left panel, set against a pale ground that allows the darker facial engraving to remain dominant. The Central Bank of Nigeria name, denomination and 2016 date progress across the centre toward the bank emblem and the CBN watermark. Clear polymer interrupts the printed field with light, while interlocking curves and small value devices replace the visual weight a security thread would provide on paper.
Reverse
Four Nkpokiti dancers gather around drums across the reverse, their overlapping poses forming a denser group than the solitary portrait on the front. A green map of Nigeria appears above the bank emblem at left, and the national coat of arms balances the opposite side. Multilingual value inscriptions are threaded between the figures, placing ceremonial performance inside the everyday language of circulation.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, P-38g belongs to the established Emefiele–Fabamwo phase of Nigeria’s polymer five-naira series. The design had already been in circulation since 2009, so the 2016 date provides the catalogue identity rather than a visual revision. Placed between the 2015 and 2017 issues with the same signatures, it helps build an uninterrupted date sequence and shows how a durable national design was renewed annually without losing its cultural focus.
