Design & Symbolism
Obverse
Three men and a woman form a compact group at left, presenting Nigerian society through age, dress and individual expression rather than a single named portrait. Blue and turquoise linework carries the eye across the Central Bank title and large denomination toward the open watermark panel. Fine curves, serial numbers and the bank emblem supply structure without disturbing the clear, light character of the polymer surface.
Reverse
Three fishermen hold two large fish across the centre of the reverse, giving the note a direct image of skill and livelihood. At left, a green silhouette of the country rises above the Central Bank emblem; multilingual denominations move along the lower field, and the coat of arms stands apart at right. The horizontal bodies of the fish slow the composition and give the working figures greater visual weight than the surrounding official devices.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, the 2023 P-40 is the final dated fifty-naira issue signed by Godwin Ifeanyi Emefiele and Ahmed Bello Umar. Its imagery belongs to a polymer type introduced in 2009, but the date places it immediately before the change to Cardoso-era signatures. That position makes the note a useful closing point for the Emefiele–Umar run and a natural bridge between an established circulating design and the administrative transition recorded on the 2024 issue.
