Cool blue polymer frames a cross-section of Nigerian society before the reverse shifts from civic portraiture to the physical labour of fishing.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
A woman and three men stand together at left, their differing dress and profiles arranged as a collective portrait. Deep blue engraving is softened by turquoise and pale green underprint, leaving the denomination and Central Bank lettering clear across the middle. The transparent right field contains the CBN watermark device, and the absence of a conventional thread allows open space to become an active part of the security design.
Reverse
The reverse centres on three men displaying two substantial fish, a scene shaped by extended arms and the long diagonal sweep of the catch. Nigeria’s map, the bank emblem and multilingual denomination text occupy the left half, while the coat of arms closes the opposite edge. Blue printing binds labour, geography and state insignia into one field without reducing the fishermen to a minor decorative vignette.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, the 2024 P-40 records the first Cardoso–Solaja signature pairing on the regular fifty-naira polymer note. Nothing in the citizen group or fishing scene announces that change, so identification depends on reading the date and officials rather than looking for a redesign. Beside the 2023 issue it captures a clean handover at the Central Bank, while the following year adds another signature form and broadens the modern P-40 sequence.
