Design & Symbolism
Obverse
Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe appears at left, his portrait carried in dark green engraving against ornamental patterns adapted from Nigerian traditional art. Ajami Hausa and English text, the large five-hundred-naira value and black serial numbers organize the remaining field. A windowed thread repeating CBN and a watermark combining Azikiwe with electrotype CBN 500 supply the principal transmitted-light and reflective security details.
Reverse
An offshore oil platform stands across the reverse, its steel framework, cranes and working decks drawn as a complex silhouette above the sea. The long horizontal waterline contrasts with the vertical machinery, giving the industrial subject a clear sense of scale. Central Bank lettering, denomination devices and the national coat of arms frame the structure without disguising the importance of petroleum infrastructure to the note’s economic narrative.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, P-48(2) is the second 2023 form of the green five-hundred-naira issue, pairing newly appointed Governor Olayemi Michael Cardoso with Elizabeth Amos Kwaghe. The earlier 2023 form retains Emefiele as governor, so the two notes capture a change at the top of the Central Bank while keeping the same director’s signature. That precise handover gives the pair greater historical clarity than a simple run of dates and makes this variety the opening Cardoso form of the denomination.
