Design & Symbolism
Obverse
The national coat of arms anchors a compact field of Korean text and finely layered guilloches. With no portrait or scenic vignette, colour and line density carry the design, giving the one-chon denomination the direct appearance of a purpose-made exchange instrument.
Reverse
Interlocking guilloche patterns fill the reverse around the denomination. The absence of pictorial imagery keeps attention on value and authentication, while the small 100-by-45-millimetre format reinforces the certificate’s functional character.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, P-23(2) is the lowest denomination in the mauve-and-blue group of 1988-dated certificates reportedly used during the Pyongyang International Sports and Culture Festival for Peace in April 1995. It differs from the earlier blue-and-purple capitalist series mainly through colour, making close comparison across the two groups an important part of attribution.
