Design & Symbolism
Obverse
The national coat of arms stands among Korean inscriptions and the one-chon value within a tightly organised red field. With imagery reduced to a single emblem, the face communicates origin and denomination through direct hierarchy rather than narrative detail.
Reverse
Guilloche work fills the reverse in repeating curves around the value. The uncluttered structure and single dominant colour distinguish the socialist-visitor series from the cooler capitalist certificates while retaining the same compact format.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, P-31 opens the fractional range of the red 1988 foreign-exchange certificates intended for visitors from socialist countries. The series remained in use until 1999 and was formally abolished in 2002 as North Korea moved toward direct use of foreign currencies. Its one-chon value is the natural starting point for assembling this separate exchange system by denomination.
