The Chollima Monument surges through disciplined brown and green engraving toward an industrial waterfront.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
The monumental pairing of a woman holding wheat and a man carrying a book rides the winged Chollima above Mansu Hill. The sculpture fills the face with diagonal movement, while the national emblem and Korean inscriptions hold the composition within a formal state frame. Fine geometric work surrounds the monument without diminishing its forward momentum.
Reverse
Sailing boats cross a broad waterfront lined with factories and smokestacks. The reverse trades monumental ascent for horizontal movement, joining older forms of transport with an industrial shoreline. Open water and distant structures give the scene more depth than the tightly concentrated sculptural face.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, P-20a is the unoverprinted circulation form of a design later adapted for several foreign-exchange uses. Its plain reverse separates it from variants carrying coloured seals or numbered guilloches, so attribution depends on what is absent as much as on what is present. The note also places one of Pyongyang’s defining monuments within the everyday currency of the late 1970s.
