Kim Il Sung’s portrait faces a quiet view of Mangyongdae, linking political biography with an idealised place of origin.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
Kim Il Sung dominates the face in a formal engraved portrait surrounded by flowers, Korean inscriptions and the national emblem. Tan, pink, brown and green tones soften the scale of the denomination while keeping the portrait unmistakably central. The sparse arrangement gives the leader more visual space than the crowded collective scenes used elsewhere in the series.
Reverse
Trees and flowers frame the houses at Mangyongdae identified as Kim Il Sung’s birthplace. The reverse shifts from official portraiture to a carefully preserved domestic landscape, extending the biographical narrative through place rather than another human figure.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, P-22 occupies a singular position in the 1978 series. The lower denominations were adapted into several seal and guilloche varieties for circulation and foreign-exchange use, but the 100-won design did not follow that five-part pattern. Its larger format, Chollima watermark and direct pairing of portrait with birthplace give the series a distinct culminating note.
