Kim Il Sung’s portrait and the houses of Mangyongdae are held within cool green and light-blue fields.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
Kim Il Sung appears beside magnolia blossoms, the national emblem and Korean inscriptions. The green-and-light-blue face is spacious despite the large denomination, allowing the portrait to remain calm and dominant rather than competing with extensive narrative imagery.
Reverse
The houses at Mangyongdae emerge among trees on the reverse. Their low domestic forms provide a deliberate contrast to the official portrait, extending the leader-centred design through birthplace and memory rather than monumental architecture.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, P-45a(1) belongs to the one-thousand-won issue introduced after the July 2002 devaluation of North Korea’s official exchange rate. This example corresponds to the three-quarter-view Arch of Triumph watermark, a paper variety that matters even though the printed design remains unchanged. It combines a major monetary adjustment with a subtle attribution point visible only through transmitted light.
