Design & Symbolism
Obverse
The house identified as Kim Jong Suk’s birthplace remains the central scene beneath Korean text and the national emblem. A seventieth-anniversary overprint, added to the 2008-dated base note, commemorates the foundation of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea and introduces a second historical layer without changing the underlying domestic image.
Reverse
Birch trees line Lake Samji beneath a distant mountain. The reverse remains free of the anniversary inscription, allowing landscape and open water to balance the denser commemorative face.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, P-CS21 was one of the first denominations issued in the 2018 seventieth-anniversary overprint group. The 1,000- and 2,000-won notes reportedly reached buyers before the lower values, and their relatively discreet overprints could be overlooked during payment. That episode led to larger markings on later denominations and gives this issue a direct connection between design visibility and practical use.
