The seventieth-anniversary inscription enters a landscape already shaped by Jong Il Peak and Mount Paektu.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
Jong Il Peak, trees and the cabin identified as Kim Jong Il’s birthplace remain visible beneath the national emblem and Korean inscriptions. The added seventieth-anniversary text commemorates the foundation of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, placing the 2018 message over a base note dated 2008.
Reverse
Fir trees and Mount Paektu extend across the reverse in light blue and gray. The uncluttered mountain view remains unchanged, allowing the anniversary overprint on the face to define the variant while the landscape preserves continuity with the regular issue.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, P-CS22 belongs to the first pair of high denominations in the 2018 foundation-anniversary group. These early overprinted notes were reportedly sold below face value and sometimes passed as ordinary currency when merchants failed to notice the added text. Its understated marking therefore records the design problem that prompted larger overprints and an explicit commemorative label on the later lower values.
