ThemeScience & Medicine

Students, industry and an atomic symbol gather around a small denomination charged with the language of education and progress.

Design & Symbolism

Obverse

A boy rests one hand on a globe while holding a book, accompanied by students, an atomic symbol, buildings and a factory. The national emblem crowns the blue-and-green field, joining scientific study and industrial development within a deliberately youthful composition. Lithographed linework gives this 1998-dated issue a flatter texture than its earlier counterpart.

Reverse

The Grand People’s Study House extends across the reverse beneath Korean inscriptions. Its tiered roofs and long façade shift the note from the energetic group on the face toward a single monumental centre of learning in Pyongyang.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, P-40b(3) belongs to the 1998-dated reworking of the reduced-size five-won design. This issue introduced a Juche year alongside the Gregorian date and used coarser lithographed production than the preceding 1992 version. The Pick subtype identifies a more specific catalogue variety, while the broader design records the educational and industrial themes carried across both printings.
