Design & Symbolism
Obverse
A bespectacled man and a boy wearing a cap stand among an atomic symbol, Korean inscriptions and the national emblem. The figures give the face a human focus, while the scientific emblem directs the design toward technical education and development. A boxed red specimen overprint and all-zero serial number distinguish this non-circulating example.
Reverse
A large dam spans the reverse beneath Korean text. Its broad structure replaces the close human grouping with a single work of infrastructure, giving the small denomination a sense of scale and placing scientific ambition beside engineered landscape.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, P-58s is the specimen form of a note dated 2002 but introduced with North Korea’s revalued currency on 30 November 2009. The boxed Korean specimen mark and all-zero serial number separate it from the circulating issue. Its earlier printed date records the unusual reuse of prepared designs at the moment when the authorities sharply restricted conversion of old cash.
