The flame of the Juche Tower rises above a compact civic group before the design opens toward Mount Paektu.

Design & Symbolism

Obverse

The Juche Tower and its flame anchor the face beside three citizens: a man in a suit, a worker in overalls and a woman wearing a headscarf. An olive branch and the national emblem complete the brown-and-olive composition. Human figures and monument are drawn together so closely that civic identity and state ideology occupy the same visual plane.

Reverse

Fir trees lead toward Mount Paektu across an open mountainous landscape. After the compressed monument-and-figures arrangement on the face, the reverse introduces distance and stillness, giving the denomination a geographic counterpart to its political imagery.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, P-42a(1) belongs to the reduced-size 1992 series introduced during the economic disruption that followed the dissolution of the Soviet Union. The issue replaced the physically larger 1978 notes while retaining recognisably North Korean monuments and landscapes. Its Juche-torch watermark ties the paper itself to the monument that dominates the face.
