Deep purple engraving gives Kim Il Sung’s portrait and the Mangyongdae landscape a concentrated ceremonial weight.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
Kim Il Sung dominates the face beside magnolia blossoms, Korean inscriptions and the national emblem. Purple linework gathers closely around the portrait, while the value devices and shorter corner banners keep the high denomination visually contained within the revised 2006 layout.
Reverse
Trees frame the houses at Mangyongdae across the reverse. The scene shifts from formal portraiture to a quieter biographical landscape, maintaining continuity with the related one-thousand-won design while the deeper palette signals the higher value.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, P-46c(4) is part of the 2006-dated revision of the five-thousand-won issue, identifiable within a design also produced with six- and seven-digit serial numbers. Its shortened corner banners distinguish the revision from the 2002 predecessor. Positioned immediately before the 2009 revaluation series, it captures the final form of the long-running Kim Il Sung portrait type at this denomination.
