A Viking ship's sweeping hull meets the outline of a modern bow, setting two ages of Norwegian shipbuilding beside one another.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
The Gokstad ship dominates the red-orange face, with the modern X-BOW design faintly visible behind it. One hull is preserved from the Viking Age; the other belongs to contemporary maritime engineering. An Atlantic puffin occupies the upper right, while the long curve of the older vessel gives the otherwise densely worked picture its clearest line.
Reverse
A cargo ship emerges from rectangular forms along the horizon. Their stretched proportions and the crests in the wave pattern suggest a gentle breeze, continuing the series' progression through wind conditions. A globe and part of Orion place the ship within a wider navigational setting, extending the obverse's comparison of hulls into the movement of goods across seas.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, this is one of the two denominations that opened Norway's eighth series on 30 May 2017, although the note carries 2016. Olsen / Eklund signatures belong to this early printing. Alongside the previous Flagstad hundred, it records the series' decisive move away from individual cultural portraits towards a connected account of Norway's relationship with the sea.
