Utvær Lighthouse stands sharply against a green coastal setting; on the other side, its signal dissolves into rectangles and waves.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
The lighthouse at Utvær supplies the principal image, accompanied by an Atlantic puffin at the upper right. Built in 1900 on Norway's western coast, the tower belongs to the network of seamarks that makes coastal travel possible. Its recognisable outline provides a fixed point within the green design before the reverse takes up the less tangible subject of light.
Reverse
Short rectangular shapes describe a lighthouse signal, while low, curved waves suggest light wind. The constellation Ursa Major and a nautical-chart symbol for lighthouse sectors add two further ways of finding direction. Here navigation is drawn through patterns and signs: the physical tower has become the information a navigator can read from it.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, the printed 2017 date precedes the denomination's release on 18 October 2018. The fifty belongs to the second stage of Series VIII, following the hundred and two-hundred. It is also the only denomination in the family without the moving anchor-chain feature, making a side-by-side comparison useful for studying how the security design changes with value.
