Design & Symbolism
Obverse
Mohammed Ali Jinnah appears in a jacket and tie beside Urdu inscriptions and broad denomination panels. Brown, pink, orange and purple engraving softens the formal portrait, while the watermark area and solid security thread are absorbed into the surrounding guilloche rather than treated as separate visual elements.
Reverse
Railway tracks converge at the entrance to Khojak Tunnel, also known as Sheilla Bagh Tunnel, in Killa Abdullah, Balochistan. The perspective draws the eye directly into the mountain passage. English text and the State Bank emblem accompany the scene, with no Urdu inscription beneath the bank name on this first type.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, P-28(1) is the opening Syed Osman Ali signature variety of the redesigned five-rupee note introduced in July 1976. It belongs to the first post-1971 series that removed Bengali text and imagery associated with East Pakistan, giving the issue a clear place at the beginning of a revised national sequence.
