A carved bowl, curved tusks and strings of shells gather beneath the blue sweep of a bird of paradise.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
Long plumes spread across the centre from the bird of paradise perched on a Kundu drum and ceremonial spear. The national arms are engraved in blue, with lighter yellow-green patterns extending toward the large corner numerals.
Reverse
A Tami bowl forms the broad centre of an arrangement of traditional valuables. Bird-of-paradise skin rises behind it, while Tambu shell money from New Britain and boar tusks from the Highlands curl around its sides. Their different surfaces and looping outlines bring together objects valued for exchange, adornment and ceremonial use.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, P-7 records an early practical revision of the kina introduced in 1975. Subtle background printing replaced the original design's broad white areas to make soiling less conspicuous in tropical circulation. The undated 1980 issue therefore belongs to the same cultural design family as the first ten kina, but not to its original printing.
