Green and teal engraving gathers Papua New Guinea’s national emblem and regional artefacts into a compact cultural field.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
The obverse is centred on the Papua New Guinean coat of arms, with the bird of paradise perched on a Kundu drum and ceremonial spear. Green, yellow and teal patterning surrounds the emblem, while the two-kina denomination and English text are held within a dense ornamental structure. The design gives the small note a ceremonial centre, using national insignia rather than portraiture to define the currency.
Reverse
The reverse brings together a Mount Hagen axe, Kula arm band from Milne Bay Province, engraved dogs’ tooth necklace from Bougainville, a Sepik clay pot and tapa cloth patterns. These objects are arranged as a cultural ensemble rather than a single scene, turning the reverse into a map of material traditions across Papua New Guinea. The solid security thread remains modest, allowing the artefacts and patterning to carry the visual weight.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, this 2 Kina note belongs to Papua New Guinea’s early paper currency period, a chapter later closed when the older kina issues were withdrawn from circulation in 2013. Its AGY-AKJ prefix range, Note Printing Australia production and Bank logo watermark define it as a precise early kina variety, while the cultural artefact reverse gives the note strong appeal for collectors of Pacific currencies and traditional material culture on banknotes.
