Design & Symbolism
Obverse
The bank's fortieth-anniversary logo sits near the clear window, to the right of Parliament House. The building's sharply sloping roof and decorated façade remain the largest elements, with the national arms above its left end. Green and pale yellow surround the small red anniversary accent.
Reverse
A Mount Hagen axe crosses a cluster of regional objects: a Kula armband, a Bougainville dogs' tooth necklace and a Sepik clay pot. The broad axe blade overlaps the finer ornaments, with the rounded pot above it at the right and tapa-cloth patterning behind the group.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, this issue marks forty years since the Bank of Papua New Guinea was established in 1973, before independence and before the kina entered use. Comparing it with the 2008 thirty-fifth-anniversary two kina isolates a changing commemorative emblem within a largely stable design. It offers a compact way to follow the central bank's own timeline on circulating money.
