Warm red-brown engraving links Parliament's angular façade with the curved shells and tusks of customary wealth.

Design & Symbolism

Obverse

The decorated entrance of Parliament House occupies the centre, with the long side of the building receding to the left. Above it sits the bird-of-paradise emblem; below, a small anniversary device marks thirty-five years of the central bank. A large twenty occupies the upper right.

Reverse

A boar's head dominates the cluster of valuables on the right. A cowrie-shell necklace from Madang, a Toa armband from Central Province and a shell ornament from Western Province surround it. Their overlapping loops and points stand against fine tapa-derived patterning.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, the printed 2008 date and the 2009 release belong to different stages of this commemorative. Issued for Kina and Toea Day, the twenty and hundred kina returned familiar polymer designs to paper and carried the bank's thirty-fifth-anniversary emblem. This twenty kina is therefore a separate material issue, not simply a dated reprint of the regular polymer note.
