A coloured Silver Jubilee emblem accompanies the violet national bird, opposite engraved shell necklaces and a pointed Hombuli mask.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
Papua New Guinea's bird of paradise spreads its plumes above the drum and spear of the national arms. A coloured Silver Jubilee logo sits beside the pale watermark area, distinct from the surrounding violet engraving.
Reverse
A pointed Hombuli mask occupies the centre, surrounded by necklaces, shell valuables and tapa-cloth patterns. These include a Highlands kina shell, a necklace from Milne Bay and another incorporating seeds from New Ireland. Their close arrangement preserves a vocabulary of customary wealth alongside a denomination whose name itself comes from a valued shell.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, this five kina marks twenty-five years of independence in 2000. The Silver Jubilee group combines paper five- and twenty-kina notes with polymer two, ten and fifty kina. Its ISJ prefix abbreviates Independence Silver Jubilee, and its six-digit serial number lacks the year code used by the other denominations.
