Design & Symbolism
Obverse
The emblem of the XIII South Pacific Games appears at the left of the bird-of-paradise arms. Its compact coloured shapes contrast with the fine violet engraving of the plumes, drum and spear. Large fives occupy the upper corners.
Reverse
The Hombuli mask's narrow face sits between the rounded contours of shell necklaces and a Highlands kina shell. Milne Bay shellwork and New Ireland seed adornments fill the neighbouring space, with tapa patterns behind them. The mask is associated with bridal payments in the Sepik region.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, P-34 connects Papua New Guinea's currency with the 2007 South Pacific Games. It also preserves the older paper five-kina design during the country's wider move to polymer. The sporting badge distinguishes this issue from the Silver Jubilee and regular printings that share the same reverse.
