ThemeMilitary & Historical Events

Green engraving over a pale multicolour ground gives this 100 Guaraníes note a historical tone, joining General José Eduvigis Díaz with the ruins of Humaitá.

Design & Symbolism

Obverse

The obverse presents General José Eduvigis Díaz at the right, facing the central Cien Guaraníes denomination panel. At the left, the Ministry of Finance oval shield with lion and cap sits within a formal guilloche field, while the legal tender text and green security engraving place the portrait inside a restrained state-bank composition.

Reverse

The reverse centres on the Ruinas de Humaitá 1865/70, identified as the ruins of St. Charles Borromeo Church in Humaitá. The architectural remains are framed by ornamental denomination panels and Guaraní-language value text, turning the back into a historical scene connected to Paraguay’s nineteenth-century military memory.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, this demonetized bilingual issue is notable for carrying the denomination in Spanish on the front and Guaraní on the reverse. Its relevance lies in the Falcón / Páez signature combination, De La Rue printing, solid security thread, absence of watermark and Humaitá ruins reverse within the later signature varieties of the same design family.
