A dark Ang Bagong Lipunan overprint cuts across Mabini's portrait issue, turning an established design into an unmistakable document of the Marcos era.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
Apolinario Mabini remains the dominant figure at left, engraved in brown against an olive field and facing into the note's central inscriptions. Across that established layout, ANG BAGONG LIPUNAN and a guilloche device add a forceful new layer above the original Filipino text. The Bangko Sentral seal, segmented solid security thread and open watermark panel retain the technical structure of the underlying type.
Reverse
Barasoain Church occupies the right side of the reverse, framed by brown ornament and a broad pale field. Its stone facade and bell tower introduce architectural stillness after the more crowded political messaging of the front. The reverse was left visually unchanged, allowing the contrast between historic church and newly altered obverse to remain especially clear.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, P-154 is defined by the Ang Bagong Lipunan intervention rather than by a new portrait or reverse. Set beside P-144 or P-149, it shows how an existing Mabini design was redirected through overprint while the Marcos-Licaros signatures continued. That makes the note valuable for studying political messaging through currency, especially where a familiar circulation type acquires a new ideological layer without being fully redesigned.
