Marcos's third presidential inauguration is announced across an established Mabini note, turning familiar imagery into a dated political document.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
Apolinario Mabini's brown portrait occupies the left, looking toward the central bank text and Ang Bagong Lipunan device. A dark commemorative overprint names Ferdinand E. Marcos and marks 30 June 1981, adding a new political focus without replacing the underlying composition. The Bangko Sentral seal, segmented security thread and Mabini watermark continue from the regular ten-piso issue.
Reverse
Barasoain Church remains the sole pictorial subject on the reverse, its facade and bell tower set within brown ornamental curves. A large pale watermark panel balances the building on the left, while the value is repeated in numerals and Filipino text along the edges. Because the reverse was not altered, the dated message on the face reads as a deliberate intervention rather than a complete redesign.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, P-167 belongs to a narrow category of circulating commemoratives created by overprinting a current design. The regular-prefix note should be kept distinct from the FM-prefix presentation version, but its wider interest lies in the unchanged Mabini and Barasoain framework beneath the inauguration message. It captures how quickly currency could be adapted to a political occasion while remaining visually tied to the series already in circulation.
