Sergio Osmena's red portrait is answered by the disciplined facade of the Batasan building, joining statesman and legislature across the note.

Design & Symbolism

Obverse

A forward-facing portrait of Sergio Osmena fills the left side in red and brown, set against a narrow yellow underprint and dense line engraving. Filipino bank text occupies the centre, crossed by the Ang Bagong Lipunan device, while the revised Bangko Sentral seal closes the lower right. The segmented security thread and pale watermark field are absorbed into a compact, edge-to-edge layout.

Reverse

The Gusaling Batasan building stretches across the right half of the reverse, its columns, windows and central pediment rendered as a long civic elevation. Waving red and blue security lines surround the architecture, while a large watermark area opens on the left. The building's strict symmetry provides a measured counterpart to Osmena's portrait and the crowded political typography of the face.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, P-163b marks the middle signature period of the fifty-piso type, with Jaime C. Laya appearing beside Ferdinand E. Marcos. It sits between the earlier Licaros and later Fernandez forms, creating a clear three-stage sequence without any change to the principal artwork. This makes the note a natural anchor for a signature-based study of the New Society series rather than merely another example of the Osmena design.
