Romania 1 Leu 2024, P-117, UNC

Green, blue and yellow polymer frames Nicolae Iorga beside gentian flowers before turning toward Curtea de Argeș and Wallachian heraldry.

Design & Symbolism

Obverse

Nicolae Iorga’s portrait occupies the right side, facing blue gentian flowers arranged across layered green, yellow and blue fields. Romania’s crowned coat of arms appears at upper left, while the denomination, signatures and BNR monogram structure the lower register. The clear window carries shadow images of Iorga and the BNR monogram, integrating the security element into the portrait composition.

Reverse

The Episcopal Cathedral of Curtea de Argeș Monastery rises at centre, accompanied by the Wallachian eagle holding a cross in its beak. Floral registration devices, repeated BNR monograms and green-yellow geometric patterns surround the architecture. The reverse extends the historian’s portrait into Romania’s religious and heraldic past, while a pearlescent denomination strip introduces a changing surface accent.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, this 2024 printing is identified by the opening serial digits 24 and belongs to the crowned-coat-of-arms revision of the design. Because the note continues to display the fixed 1 January 2018 date, the serial-year code is essential for correct attribution. It should be separated from the visually similar 2023 and 2025 printings.
