Rwanda 100 Francs 1989, P-19(2), UNC

Violet, blue and green engraving places Rwanda’s zebras against a highland landscape shaped by volcanoes and everyday rural life.

Design & Symbolism

Obverse

The obverse is dominated by a large zebra portrait at the right, with four more zebras moving across the central field beneath French text and the 100 Francs denomination. A flower acts as the registration device, while the coat of arms and layered geometric patterning give the wildlife scene an official monetary frame. The composition makes the zebra both a national natural motif and the visual anchor of the note.

Reverse

The reverse turns toward a woman carrying a baby at the left, with Mount Bisoke and Mount Karisimbi rising across the centre within Volcanoes National Park. Kinyarwanda text and the word AMAFARANGA sit above the mountain landscape, while the flower motif returns near the watermark area. The reverse balances human presence, highland geography and volcanic terrain without losing the quiet scale of the small denomination.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, this 100 Francs note belongs to Rwanda’s 1988-1989 issues, where dates, signatories, titles and the Kinyarwanda denomination spelling were revised from the preceding series. The P-19(2) / B119a variety is distinguished by the 24 April 1989 date, Rwabukumba and Ruzindana signature combination, J-Z prefix range, impala head watermark, no security thread and AMAFARANGA reverse spelling, making it a useful type for collectors of Rwandan franc issues and African wildlife banknotes.
