ThemeCultural Heritage

A stone lion rises through green engraving, while a painted stork carries the design from medieval Yapahuwa to the civic heart of Colombo.

Design & Symbolism

Obverse

The sculpted lion from Yapahuwa dominates the right side, its raised head and tightly curled mane modelled in dark green and brown linework. Sinhala, Tamil and English inscriptions occupy the centre, while the date, serial numbers and denomination settle into the pale margins. A latent image at lower centre adds a quiet optical detail without disturbing the archaeological focus.

Reverse

A painted stork stands above the Presidential Secretariat in Colombo, with flowers and leafy ornament filling the lower portion of the vertical design. The open watermark field creates space beside the architecture, allowing the bird and building to read as a single passage from nature to government. Fine green patterning holds the scene together across the narrow format.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, P-108b marks the second regular signature stage of a design that remained in use for more than a decade. The 12 December 2001 date and Choksy-Jayawardena pairing place it between the opening 1995 issue and the shorter-lived changes of 2004. It gives a chronological P-108 set a clear point of transition without relying on altered artwork.
