ThemeCultural Heritage

The Yapahuwa lion gathers the note's green and brown engraving into a compact emblem of endurance, balanced by a quieter Colombo scene on the reverse.

Design & Symbolism

Obverse

The right half is claimed by the Yapahuwa lion sculpture, its carved body emerging from layered green security lines. A broad inscription field in Sinhala, Tamil and English runs beside it, interrupted only by the date, signatures and a latent denomination near the lower centre. The asymmetry gives the small note a firm visual direction from open paper toward stone.

Reverse

Colombo's Presidential Secretariat appears below a painted stork in the vertically arranged reverse. Flowers press into the lower edge as a natural counterpoint to the building's long facade, while the pale watermark space prevents the scene from becoming dense. The stork links the formal urban landmark to the island's birdlife without turning the reverse into a conventional city view.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, P-108e is the penultimate regular variety of the Yapahuwa lion design. Its 19 November 2005 date joins Mahinda Rajapaksa with Sunil Mendis shortly before Ajith Nivard Cabraal appeared on the final issue. The note belongs naturally in a signature-led sequence, where an unchanged composition becomes a record of successive monetary administrations.
