Design & Symbolism

Obverse

Laxapana waterfall descends across the left side as the Norochcholai coal power plant extends through the centre. An Autumn Leaf butterfly rests near the lower edge and the endemic Sri Lanka Orange-billed Babbler appears at right. The design lets water, energy infrastructure and wildlife meet without reducing any one subject to background ornament.

Reverse

A Bharatanatyam dancer faces a seated Mridangam drummer on the vertical reverse. The adjacent Naga guard stone and double Dvithva liya vela floral motif add sculptural and ornamental depth over the faint island map. The measured pose of the dancer gives the reverse a formal calm after the broad landscape and industrial structures on the face.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, the 2021 P-125 records the Basil Rajapaksa and Ajith Nivard Cabraal pairing at the 100-rupee denomination. It follows the 2020 printing and begins another short signature stage within the long-running design. Because the imagery remains stable, it is especially relevant to collectors building the series by dated administrative changes.
